The new RGS President: Professor Dame Jane Francis

From the 3rd of June, the RGS-IBG President for the next three years is Professor Dame Jane Francis.

She is currently the Director of the British Antarctic Survey. It was a pleasure to meet her a few weeks ago at my first Council meeting, of which more in a future post.

She has had significant experience at high level in a number of academic positions, and became the Director of the British Antarctic Survey in 2013.

Find out more about her in this profile on the RGS website, where she answers a few questions.

Here are her plans for her time in office. I hope to be able to support her with some of these.

I hope that I can help to promote the Society and the wonders of geography and our planet to as wide of an audience as possible. In practical terms, the Society has an outstanding archive of items that are not easy to access. It would be great to open up the building for visitors to be inspired by the Collections, but that also requires some modifications to the building and raising funds.
