RGS President 1914-17: Douglas W Freshfield

There have been several people who have served as President of the Royal Geographical Society as well as President of the Geographical Association. The first of these was Douglas Freshfield. This blog post was originall written for my GA Presidents blog project. In 1897, following a period during which the GA was developing its constitution and statutes, Douglas W Freshfield became the first GA President. This followed his resignation from the Royal Geographical Society, apparently partly because the organisation would not admit women Fellows. He remained in office until 1911, a period which has not been surpassed since, and will not now be, as the Presidency is a one year post (bracketed by other related responsibilities) From the chronology written by Peter Jackson for the GA website. (see separate blog post) Douglas Freshfield was one of the people who attended the first meeting when the Association was formed. He was the first Honorary Secretary of the Royal Geo...

RGS President 1963-1966: Sir Dudley Stamp

There have been several people who have served as President of the Royal Geographical Society as well as President of the Geographical Association. The sixth of these was Sir Dudley Stamp. He bcame President in the year of my birth. He was hugely influential and well travelled, and his name crops up all the time. This blog post was originally written for my GA Presidents blog project. Another geographical great was GA President in 1950. One whose work is still referenced today, and who was very prolific and started young. Just two years after H. J. Fleure, we had another geographical 'big hitter'. Professor (Laurence) Dudley Stamp was one of the leading lights in geography of the 20th Century, and his work is still referenced today, and some of his books are still in print and available to purchase. He was prolific in his output, and served on a great many committees and supported the work of many different organisations. He was a real globe-trotter in an era when...

Festival of Geography 2025

The first joint event between the Royal Geographical Society and the Geographical Association for some time took place in London earlier. It was a hot and sultry day for it and we had a good turn out at the RGS in the Education Room. Thanks to all those people who booked on the course. It was good to meet some new folks as well as see some familiar faces. Thanks also to the speakers. When I arrived at the event I was told there was some "good news". Instead of going on at the end of the event I was going on first as the first speaker was caught up in train cancellations. I spoke about the different ways that careers can be embedded into the curriculum, and other support for teachers. From September 2025, the new Gatsby Benchmarks have expectations that every student in every year will have some sort of subject specific careers support as part of Benchmark #4. If you want to know more about what I said, there is an online webinar coming up in September which you can book onto...
