RGS President 1914-17: Douglas W Freshfield

There have been several people who have served as President of the Royal Geographical Society as well as President of the Geographical Association. The first of these was Douglas Freshfield. This blog post was originall written for my GA Presidents blog project. In 1897, following a period during which the GA was developing its constitution and statutes, Douglas W Freshfield became the first GA President. This followed his resignation from the Royal Geographical Society, apparently partly because the organisation would not admit women Fellows. He remained in office until 1911, a period which has not been surpassed since, and will not now be, as the Presidency is a one year post (bracketed by other related responsibilities) From the chronology written by Peter Jackson for the GA website. UCL Fawcett Fellowship applications - now open for 2025-26

Applications are now welcome to become a UCL Fawcett Fellow for 2025-6 . I was proud to be a Fawcett Fellow for 2022-3, working with Alex Standish and my fellow Fellows to discuss curriculum. It formed the basis for a presentation I prepared for the IGU Centenary conference in Paris and there is also (potentially) a book coming out in the next year or so with a chapter based on my research. Festival of Geography 2025

The first joint event between the Royal Geographical Society and the Geographical Association for some time took place in London earlier. It was a hot and sultry day for it and we had a good turn out at the RGS in the Education Room. Thanks to all those people who booked on the course. It was good to meet some new folks as well as see some familiar faces. Thanks also to the speakers. When I arrived at the event I was told there was some "good news". Instead of going on at the end of the event I was going on first as the first speaker was caught up in train cancellations. I spoke about the different ways that careers can be embedded into the curriculum, and other support for teachers. From September 2025, the new Gatsby Benchmarks have expectations that every student in every year will have some sort of subject specific careers support as part of Benchmark #4.
