When I was named as the prospective GA President and started on my journey, I produced a blog which had a biography of every previous GA President (and will maintain it indefinitely and add future Presidents as they take office. It now has over 900 posts.
I wasn't intending doing that for the RGS as well, as I think some of these people may have more written about them than some of the GA Presidents - although many of them share familiar backgrounds, upbringings, Universities, honours and links with Empire, Colonialism and other issues of the time.
They also started their roles in 1830, whereas the GA's first President was not until 1897. I've already posted about the three RGS Presidents who were also GA President.
The first President of the RGS (as it was until the 1990s when it paired with the IBG) was Frederick J Robinson, Viscount Goderich, 1st Earl of Ripon. It outlines his life and career, which includes holding the role of:
- President of the Board of Trade
- Chancellor of the Exchequer
- Prime Minister
His education included Harrow School and St. John's College, Cambridge.
He was a sponsor of the Corn Laws of 1815 which raised the price of corn.
His premiership only lasted 144 days, which remains one of the shortest in British history, although a lot longer than Liz Truss.References
