One of the highlights of the RGS calendar takes place in early June.
It is the day of the AGM, the Awards and Medals ceremony and the evening reception with fizz and canapes in the gardens.
These always take place at HQ in Kensington and I went down to support those receiving awards, particularly Paul Logue and Chloë Searl who were this year’s recipients of the Ordnance Survey Award for Excellence. It was good to see Paul collect his award in person.
There were some fantastic speeches. Børge Ousland’s, sent by satellite phone in texts from a tent on Ellesmere Island was excellent and Dariusz Wójcik summed up the vital significance of geography really well. Professor Sarah J Smith reflected on how long it took for a woman to be awarded the Patron's Medal, and how rare it still was for it to be awarded to a woman.
The breadth of geographical fields covered in the hour of the ceremony was breathtaking. Plenty to follow up on too...
It was good to see that my quote on fieldwork also made it into Dame Jane Francis’ Presidential Address at the AGM.
Congratulations to all those who recieved awards, and thanks to all those who nominated them (and those who nominated people who weren't successful on this occasion).
At the AGM there was also the announcement of the results of the RGS Council elections.
It will be good to welcome Simon Oakes onto the Education Committee too.
