Hello - welcome to the blog, with some exciting news

A version of this post originally appeared on the LivingGeography blog on the 30th of April 2024 Hello, I'm Alan Parkinson I've been connected with the Royal Geographical Society (RGS-IBG) for quite a number of years in various ways. In 2007 I became a Fellow of the RGS and Chartered Geographer (Teacher) and have been ever since. The annual process of reviewing my CPD and wider engagement with the subject community it requires for accreditation is something I find really valuable. In 2008, I was awarded the Society's Ordnance Survey Award for excellence in Secondary Geography Teaching. This was a proud moment and came at the culmination (I thought) of my teaching career as I was joining the Geographical Association and stepping out of the classroom. I didn't realise I'd be back again within five years. I'm delighted to be working on a number of books at the moment. It's important to keep getting involved in projects as much as possible, and I'm always pleased to be involved in something like this, which over 30 people have contributed to. It's due out towards the end of the year all being well. What will this blog include?

In this second post on my new blog, I shall share some of the topics that I intend to add to this blog in the coming years. In June 2024, at the AGM , I will be confirmed as the new Vice President: Education. This will involve me in a variety of activity which I will document here, as well as sharing something of the development of support for education as part of the RGS's work. You can expect me to talk about the following (and other things as yet unknown) in blog posts over the coming weeks (months and years hopefully...): the work that I undertake in my new role (of course) and the events I am involved in links to new projects and resources produced by the RGS Education team and associated staff and consultants information on the historical links between the RGS and the Geographical Association - over the years, going all the way back to Douglas Freshfield (the first GA President, who was also an RGS President) and others who held significant posts - this will be largely...
